CTI is almost 100% complete!

Well now begins the actual AmeriCorps journey, training is almost 100% over and we are this close to departing on our first spike. This week was boring, cpr/first aid (oh hair Rec Center), tool safety, personality tests. But it's practically over, Monday is our last official day of CTI thank God.
Today was good, got some more ISP hours under my belt. We worked at a Horseback riding facility that caters to the needs of people with disabilities. We did a variety of things; helped in classes, muked out stalls, started building a shed. It was good, I have tomorrow off finally. I plan on sleeping all freaking day so happy about that.
Last bit of news we have our mini spike Tues-Friday and we're going to Bellavue State Park in Willmington, DE. I'll upsate after that, til then :)

the end of week 2

Well hello blogosphere, I am again blogging from my blackberry so no pictures but lots to tell. So let's start with the most important, on Tuesday we received our permanent teams. They drove us out to a field, handed us a slip of paper with a name and a word and told us to find that person then find our name. Mass chaos let me tell you, well lucky me I am a lovely Raven 5 with Hunter as our team leader. I'm excited she's awesome as well as everyone else on the team.
This week has again been more training, we did diversity training on Wednesday (yawn), shelter simulations on Thursday, and Van driver training Friday. All were well boring, it's like being in college except the classes are 5 hours opposed to 2.
The best part of the week was we were able to do our first service project as a team. We went to Washington D.C. to work a swim meet it was incredibly long but 14 ISP hours (66 to go!). It was nice to get to know the team more, and it seems like we mesh pretty well.
LOvely enough we had the day off today for Presidents Day, so we went to Philadelphia!! It was a lot of fun, we did some history things like went and saw the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and Ben Franklin's grave. Very history filled on Presidents Day. Then we did what you have to do in Philly get a cheese steak, so we went to Pat's and it was delicious. Then we went to South Street, which has a bunch of random shops totally ace. We also went to the Art Museum and saw the Rocky steps and then to LOVE park. It was a lot of fun, it was nice to finally see a city on the East Coast.
Anyway this is our last full week at the Point, we get our specialty roles tonight and then train with those this week. Next week is our mini-spike project, and the week after that we leave for our first spike. Hopefully I'll be able to get to the library this week to update with pictures, until then!

Week One Complete

It's official, I completed my first week in AmeriCorps and what a week. My previous update went over most of the boring stuff, like all the paperwork we had to fill out, but yesterday we went on our first service project with our temporary pods (yayyyy!). It was so nice to actually go out and do something opposed to sit and listen to lectures.
My Pod, Raven 6 Ca-Caw! went to an old papermill in Delaware that has been open since the 1700's and closed down in 2007. We had to move all this old equipment from once side of this room to another so they could make room to build a temperature controlled room where they would be able to store all the documents associated with the papermill. It was very dirty work let me tell you, plus the old iron spools we had to move were crazy heavy. Very worth it to finally be out working though. Afterword they took us to this Steamcar museum, nice old snazzy cars.
It's been good, hung out at the Village last night and am going out to the bar with some people tonight. Next week we find out our teams that we will spend the next 10 months with so I can't wait for that. I'll probably update again next week when I decide to walk the 2.5 miles to the library for real internet. Here's some pictures!

First day in uniform, it is not flattering in the least.

Welcome to Americorps

So I am here, finally arrived and basically settled in. It's exciting and slightly terrifying all at the same time. I'm living in a room with 4 other girls, something that will hopefully work out well. All the roommates seem quite nice, we did luck out being in 9H (the "dorms") we're really close to everything which is nice. It's been like new people overload these past 2 days, so many names to learn.
We've completed all of our in processing and tonight we find out our temporary teams until Tuesday when we find out our actual teams. I'm part of the Raven unit, there are also moose and buffalo.I got my uniform today, yayyyy free stuff. The pants aren't exactly flattering but no big deal.
It's a nice area we're on the VA medical base which is interesting, there are Vets all over. It's also quite pretty being on the Chesepeake Bay. I won't be able to update with pictures until they get the internet working (I'm on my blackberry). I'm going to try and blog at least once a week, so until nextime :)
